How Do Diesel Engines Work?

A diesel engine generator works by using the same four-stroke principles as the gas engine; however, it differs in the combustion process.

The process is as followers:

Intake Stroke

This is the first step of the four-stroke engine process. Air moves into the engine cylinder and pushes the piston down.

Compression Stroke

After the piston is pushed down, it will begin to move back up. As it moves, it compresses the air present.

Power Stroke

When the piston gets back to the top of the cylinder, the fuel injector injects diesel into the air that has been compressed. This causes spontaneous combustion, in the absence of a spark plug. This reaction forces the piston to move back down.

Exhaust Stroke

The piston then moves back to the top of the cylinder. It pushes the exhaust gases out of the engine.

The reason that modern diesel generators don’t require the spark plug for igniting the air/fuel mixture is that the air is compressed more than with a gas engine. As the air is compressed tighter and tighter, it will continue heating up.

Because some generators will adjust the engine speed based on the load demand to achieve a higher level of fuel efficiency, this is important to know.

Typically, the warranty for generator systems ranges from two up to five years. However, if you purchase an industrial diesel generator, it may have a one to two-year warranty along with a few optional upgrades.

Generator Type, Age, and Hours

Do you need a single – or a three-phase generator? The age of the equipment and total hours it has been used should be considered, too. You also need to think about how the generator was used before you are buying it if you choose to buy used.
